Event Photography
When shooting event photography, remember that the
photos should tell a story of the events of an exciting, memorable
time. Taking the photos in chronological order will help to create a
timeline of the events. Important events can be photographed and kept
as a cherished memory of a wedding, graduation or other special time in
a person’s life.
Understanding all aspects of the camera is very
important. Practicing and developing techniques will assist in
achieving optimum outcome using different settings. Learning the
degrees of the aperture setting and various shutter speeds will help to
develop properly balanced photos, and this can only be done with
practice. For event photography be sure to keep all photographic
equipment in working order. Have batteries charged and keep back-up
batteries ready - nothing is more upsetting than dead batteries during
an important shot. Using a simple, clean background when possible will
help the subjects to become the main focus of the shot. Taking a lot of
photos can provide candid shots that can prove to be very enjoyable and
even humorous. If the photographer shooting the event photography
appears relaxed this will result in more relaxed subjects. Challenging
on any levels, lighting can pose different problems and create shadows,
especially if the event occurs when lighting conditions are changing.
Using a flash where needed will help to fill in the darker areas to
compliment the photo and subjects. Set camera to white balance for use
of flash instead of automatic to get most advantageous results from
lighting.

Assuring clients that things are going well is of
good practice while shooting event photography. This will help to
ensure that everyone is happy and satisfied with the work being done.
There is a necessity for controlling crowds and large groups to achieve
effective event photos. Show proper photography etiquette while
shooting certain settings. For example, during a wedding it is proper
not to use a flash throughout the ceremony. Stay in the background.
Capture the emotions of the event by observing the whole group
attending the event. Take advantage of dim light to produce dramatic
scenes to generate mood and depth to photos. Backlight can silhouette
the subject, to fill in light use a flash. Filling the
camera’s frame will add to the dramatic appeal of photos.
For family memories, event photography can play an
important role in providing remarkable lasting mementos. This is a
great way to document the growth and progress of a family member. Begin
a tradition of photographing the subject at the same time of year,
performing the same action. Try to capture similar expressions from
year to year to show changes and development.
Consult with the people in charge of the event to
ensure that the important aspects of the occasion are covered. Event
photography can be an enjoyable time for all. Photographs are a
wonderful way to keep the memories from a very special event to share
with others for years to come.
