Fine Art Photography

Fine art photography is designed to evoke emotions within the viewer and to cause an emotional response to the photograph. Fine art photographers are experts at capturing highly powerful images of individuals, nature, everyday items, symbols and other objects in a way that catches the eye and the imagination.

Fine art photography requires an ability to see items for what they are, but also for what they stand for or represent. Most fine art photography is easily identified as being shot by a particular photographer, as each has his or her own clearly defined style. Some fine art photographers used staged photography to capture the image, whereas others take spontaneous pictures that manage to capture the emotion and image.

Many fine art photographers choose to use black and white images to capture the image. These photographers believe that the black and white medium provides a focus on the image, rather than the distractions of the color. Black and white images may be of virtually any subject area, ranging from floral pictures to portraits of famous or everyday people. Some fine art photographers use abstract images and shadows in black and white photographs to provide mystery or soften images. Nudes are often photographed in black and white and shadows are used to add dimensions to the picture.

Nature

Fine art photographs of nature require considerable skill due to several factors. One of the most challenging aspects of nature photography is the constantly changing environmental conditions that the photographer has no control over. Lighting, weather, wind and even movement of clouds can either enhance or ruin a picture. Many nature photographers wait literally hours or days to snap just the perfect shot.

Human Form

Fine art photography has always focused on the beauty and unique appearance of the human form. The fine art photography that focuses on the human body may also use abstract aspects in composition with the body. Some human form photographers focus on one aspect such as faces, hands or just the body. While some fine art photographs may be of nudes, an equal number will be of other aspects of the body that include no nude shots.

Modern life

Fine art photography has been used to record the triumphs and tragedies of modern life. Photos of monuments, catastrophes and human achievements are part of our culture and many of these photographs are very well known and loved. Some modern life photographs attempt to capture an event whereas others show an aspect of life as a reality for a particulr culture or group.

To get a better understanding of fine art photography, consider attending a gallery or artists' show in your area. Many online fine art galleries allow viewing of shows from around the world from the comfort of your own computer.
