Nature Photography

Nature photography can challenge even the most expert photographer. Dealing with living, breathing and constantly moving subjects can prove to provide interesting challenges. Usually the subjects include, but are not limited to, animals, birds, all wildlife, and the surroundings in which the subject is found as well as all other aspects of nature.

The use of a digital camera while shooting nature photography is disadvantaged as the battery usage is high. In the outdoors and remote areas, recharging batteries are not usually possible. This means the photographer must be prepared to carry extra equipment. Using cameras in locations where moisture and dirt is present can cause problems or damage to the equipment. Purchasing a durable housing unit for the camera’s protection is advisable.

Shooting outdoors provides its own set of challenges. Different lighting, shadows and finding a grey scale for aperture readings can at times generate trying experiences. A manual light reading is suggested to achieve optimum exposures. Use of bracketing when shooting nature photography is a perfect way to almost guarantee a quality shot. This is the practice of taking more shots at different exposures below and above the recommended light meter reading. Early morning light usually provides a warmer and more yellowish tint to the light. Evening light gives a reddish hue to the lighting. Shooting nature photography these times of the day will help to attain crisper photos.

An overcast sky is helpful as it reduces the harshness that full sun exposure can create. The lighting issues can be minimized by the use of diffusers and fill-in flashes. Be aware that most viewfinders show the photographer only approximately 95 % of the total picture viewed. Make an effort to pan the camera around to see what is actually seen by the camera’s eye to produce an unobstructed view for a pleasing photo. Looking at a subject in a different and new way may provide an unique photo opportunity. Try using the rule of thirds by placing the subject away from the center of the photo. Have more than a third of the photo as the central area. Getting close to the subject is a great way to fill the frame on the camera, however using a telephoto lens will also help to accomplish this task. Most nature photographers use a hiding place when photographing wildlife. This will provide a place to wait for the perfect shot without much intrusion of the animal’s life.

Use of a tripod is an effective way to accomplish greater and more pleasing results in nature photography. The tripod helps to reduce the danger of camera shake, which results in blurred photos. A tripod is an essential piece of equipment to stabilize the camera.

Practice and perseverance are keys to become a successful photographer shooting nature photography. The beauty of nature can provide an array of exquisite photographs either for a personal collection or for publication.
