Pet Photography

Pet photography can prove to be difficult as the subject is usually is constant motion. Pets are usually more interested in the person that is doing the photographing than getting their picture taken. The curious nature of pets adds to the complexity of achieving a pleasing outcome with the photos. The virtue of patience is a definite prerequisite for trying to photograph pets.

Keeping a distance from the subject by using a telephoto lens is very important. Getting in close with use of the telephoto lens will help take away the background and to focus on the pet. Using a fast shutter speed will help to make the pet appear as being still. Try to shoot photographs without the pet’s knowledge. During pet photography, if a distraction is needed, use a toy or an object of interest and keep it near the camera’s lens. An assistant or other person can help to change the pet’s focus. A use of a whistle can cause the animal’s ears to perk up to add to the photograph.

Treats should be given to the animal only after the shots have been taken. Pets, especially dogs, quickly become interested in treats and will be less likely to sit for pictures if they think there is a snack handy.

Pet photography requires persistence and practice. The best way to achieve just the photo you want is to take a great number of photos. Placing the pet in natural light helps to provide an adequate amount of light without using a flash. Use of a flash is more likely to cause red-eye and take away from the natural colorings and shading of the pet’s coat. Photograph the pet at their level as this enables a more natural look to the photograph. Taking a full body shoot is better photographed from the side to enhance the look of the pet’s body. Practice the action of tracking. This practice involves following the pet’s movements and actions with the camera while watching through the viewfinder. This will allow the photographer the ability to be ready at any moment to capture a great photo. Using the LCD screen on the back of the camera is not the best option as it is too slow to capture movements without blur.

Although pet photography can be challenging, the results of the photographs can provide irresistible charm. Capturing the waking ritual of the family pet can be a rewarding and fascinating subject for a photograph. To catch the pet’s individual characteristics is part of the rewards of capturing the perfect photo. Including pets in family photos and collections of family photos is very important, as the pet is part of the family.
