Product Photography
Product photography is the key to most advertising
campaigns, magazine articles and advertisements, and even websites and
webpages that are designed to market an item. Photographing the item
and displaying it in an appealing format is the goal of product
photography.
One of the most important aspects of product
photography is good quality equipment. At the very least most product
photographers have a professional quality film camera, a digital SLR,
and lighting equipment and backgrounds. Most product photography is now
done with DSLR systems simply because photo design software allows for
manipulation of the final image and can be used to create very unique
looking advertisements.
For those interested in a career in product
photography, attending a specialized training program is an excellent
way to get started. Not only does the program allow the photographer to
enhance his or her skills with the camera but also information is
provided on staging the image, enhancing lighting, and even
manipulating the final photograph. The various compositions that can be
used to develop an image are also outlined and detailed in the training
programs.

Many product photographers specialize in a
specific type of photography. There are product photographers that work
specifically with fashion items such as clothing, jewelry, shoes and
even handbags. Other product photographers may specialize in engines,
automotives, computers or other electronic devices. The key to being a
successful product photographer is to be able to get crystal clear
images the first time the pictures are shot rather than having to
constantly repeat the shots. This allows the photographer to quickly
complete assignments and move onto new projects. Often there is
considerable stress and pressure on the photographer to complete the
photographs in a very specific time frame.
Some product photographers work in specialized
studios that have very specific set lighting. This lighting is very
important in reducing glare and enhancing the image of the product in
the photograph. Taking pictures of metallic or other reflective objects
takes a specific skill and very specific lighting. Many product
photographers travel to the product and capture its image within a
specific setting. These photographers often have to work very quickly
to adjust to changing lighting conditions or even the
“life” of the product itself. Some products, such
as food items, often discolor very quickly especially under studio
lighting so require the photographer to get the shots in very quickly.
Becoming a product photographer is a challenging
yet rewarding career. Many product photographers that specialize in one
type of photography travel around the world providing photographs for
companies, agencies and product developers. If you have a keen eye for
detail, can work under pressure and love to use photography as a way of
capturing an image, a career in product photography may be just the
career for you.
