Sports Photography

To excel in sports photography there is a need for passion for the game and an understanding of photography. Photojournalism is a good start to achieve success in this field. It takes hard work and persistent practice to develop talent and an eye for photos. A good knowledge of the sport is important as it is necessary to understand what comes next in the game. Quick reflexes and anticipation of the possible next play is crucial to catch the great shots.

Try starting with a children’s sport and work up to the big leagues. Working up to a high school sporting event is a great way to observe faster and higher quality athletes in motion. Speak to local newspapers to see if they are hiring photographers specializing in sports photography. Make sure to check if any security clearance is required before showing up at the sporting event. The practice will help to improve and gain skill.

Equipment needed for shooting at sports photography venues is very expensive but indispensable. A good investment could make or break a positive future career. The best choice for attaining pleasurable results is a long, fast telephoto lens. Using a 85mm, f 1.8 lens for indoor sports similar to basketball is the minimum possible as this sport is fast paced and usually in dimmer lighting. At a football, soccer or baseball sporting event, a 300 mm f 2.8 lens is suggested. Light is very crucial to stop the action. The use of the highest shutter speed can help to freeze-frame the moment and offer satisfying results. A flash is best used when triggered by remote control.

Grasping a great knowledge of all equipment and supplies is very essential. The more comfortable the photographer is with all aspect of the supplies needed, the better the shots will become.

Keep watch of all that is going on around the play of the game. This will help to provide original photographs. Doing research on key players and stars will help the photographer to be prepared. Keep all equipment readily available as the need for different equipment will arise. The focus of the game might take place at all different focal lengths. Take into account field position and watch the background to pull off creative shots. Taking many shots may turn out to become the “money shot”. Record the information of all the shots taken as this is helpful if a caption is needed to explain the photograph.

Be prepared to capture the moment as in sports photography it only happens once. This is no replay during the actual game or in the plays. With practice and experience it will come easily and could create a lucrative business opportunity.
